More than half of the deaths were in residential homes, and 1.3% of the residents died of the virus
According to figures from the Social Welfare Department, as of December 31 last year, there were about 75,000 subsidized and non-subsidized residential care places for the elderly in Hong Kong.
Comparing the figures released by the Department of Health, since the fifth wave of the epidemic, 16,000 residents of residential care homes for the elderly have been infected, accounting for about 21% of the total number of residents in residential care homes for the elderly.
Regarding residential care homes for the disabled, there are currently about 18,000 residents in Hong Kong.
Since the fifth wave of the epidemic, the authorities have announced that a total of 4,800 residents of RCHEs have contracted the virus, accounting for about 26% of the total residents of RCHEs.

Li Hui, executive member of the Hong Kong Elderly Services Association, believes that the above figures do not reflect the reality. She believes that many residents in the past were quickly tested positive, but they did not report it in time. Vaccination rate could rise to 60%
Li also mentioned that the fifth wave of the epidemic is fierce, and the number of residents who have been vaccinated has increased by 20% compared with that before the fifth wave of the epidemic.
