Army exposure meetings for the Bedouin population in the Negev Israel today

2022-05-24T20:11:51.117Z

After the rate of recruitment among the Bedouin dropped from tens of thousands to a few hundred, the Ripman Institute, in cooperation with military veterans from the sector, began to hold meetings for the younger generation.

Against the background of the decline in IDF recruitment over the years, the recruitment of Bedouin to the army has become negligible: from tens of percent decades ago to a few hundred a year, out of a population of about 300,000 people.

At the initiative of the Rifman Institute and in collaboration with military veterans from the Bedouin population, an initiative was established to promote conscription into the army.

The first meeting with the Bedouin youth was held in Bir HaDaj and included dozens of young people and military graduates from the Bedouin society.

At the meeting, representatives of the IDF recruitment unit, veterans and representatives of the institute spoke.

During the meeting, recruitment routes and accompanying contacts were described.

Participants also raised challenges arising from post-service unemployment, the difficulty of discharged soldiers in front of law enforcement agencies and the desire of military veterans to form an association to get adequate representation from the state and act in parallel to increase service recruitment.

The initiative, in addition to the institute, was also led by Major Mill Selma Abu-Addisen, who is currently working to establish an organization for Bedouin military veterans to encourage service in the IDF.

Hagai Reznik, head of the Rifman Institute: "Recruitment to the army is a significant part of belonging to civil society. The institute will work with all its might with state institutions to expand recruitment, along with representing the liberated who defended the state in various problems. Many more meetings are planned throughout the Negev."
