The United States is on track to match or exceed its worst year on record for the number of mass shootings, according to data compiled by the Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit organization. organization that tracks incidents of gun violence across the country.


As of June 5 of this year, there have been at least 246 mass shootings.

It's the same number that occurred in the country through June 5, 2021, the worst year on record since the Gun Violence Archive began tracking mass shootings in 2014. There were a total of 692 mass shootings in 2021.

That 246 figure also means there have been more mass shootings than days so far in 2022, a trend that has repeated every year since 2020, underscoring the growing prevalence of gun violence in American life.

Last weekend, shootings ripped through proms, a nightclub and a shopping mall, among other gathering places, claiming more than a dozen lives and leaving more than 70 injured in at least 13 mass shootings.

The weekend violence followed back-to-back massacres in recent weeks, including those at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, at a medical center in Tulsa, Oklahoma and at a church in Taiwan in Orange County, California.

The pace of mass shootings in 2022 is part of the three-year spike that began in 2020. Between 2019 and 2020, the total number of mass shootings for the entire year jumped from 417 to 610. The number jumped again in 2021 to 692. The Gun Violence Archive, like CNN, defines a mass shooting as one in which at least four people are shot, excluding the assailant.

So far in 2022, mass shootings have left 1,357 people injured, of which 278 have lost their lives.
