The "Lavi" organization submitted an urgent petition to the High Court this morning against the appointment of former Supreme Court judge, Manny Mazuz, as the chairman of the committee for appointing senior officials, in violation of the rules of restraint that apply to a transitional government. Mazuz's nomination is intended, among other things, to qualify the appointment of the Chief of Staff, also during an election period.
The submitted petition states that "This appointment should not be approved during a transitional government, due to the 'predatory' characteristics of the decision."
Supreme Court Judge Yosef Elron ordered the Ombudsman to respond to the petition by August 22, but chose not to freeze the expected appointment.

salaried position for eight years
As a reminder, yesterday it was published for the first time in "Israel Hayom" that the spokesperson Gali Baharav Miara approved for Prime Minister Lapid to appoint Judge Mazuz to the position of chairman of the committee this coming Sunday, despite the fact that the government is a "transitional government".
A salaried position that Mazuz will fill for a period of eight years, since the ombudsman's office does not allow an appointment for a shorter period. Judge Mazuz and Beharev Miara have a prior acquaintance, Mazuz was among those who recommended Miara when she ran for the position of Attorney General about six months ago.
They also added in Lavi's petition: "This is a petition for a conditional order ordering the respondents to come and say why they will not refrain from appointing the chairman of the advisory committee for appointments to senior positions during the transitional government.
At the same time, a request is submitted for an interim order instructing the government not to make a decision on the appointment until the discussion and decision on it."

Appointment for foreign reasons
In addition, the petitioners asked the court to order the government and ombudsman Miara to explain "why they will not refrain from appointing a permanent chairman of the advisory committee for appointments to senior positions, and will not be content with appointing an acting chairman but for the urgent appointment of the Chief of Staff."
The petition also states that "the appointment of the chairman of the advisory committee during a transitional government is not reasonable and is an attempt to establish facts for the government that will be established after the elections." Regarding Mazuz himself, it is stated that "the appointment was made for extraneous considerations.
The retired judge Mazuz is seen as a controversial person who is painted in bright political colors and this is due to his statements both during his tenure and even more so after."
