Darwin Núñez sent off after header in Liverpool's draw against Crystal Palace

By Ben Churc

Liverpool's new summer signing Darwin Nunez was sent off for a header on his home debut as Crystal Palace thwarted the hosts in a 1-1 draw in the English Premier League on Monday.

The striker received a red card in the second half as Liverpool looked for an equalizer after Wilfried Zaha gave Palace a surprise lead in the 32nd minute.

Nunez, who scored on his league debut for the Reds last week, was involved in what began as an innocuous altercation with defender Joachim Andersen, but then the Uruguayan striker appeared to throw his head at his opponent.

Referee Paul Tierney quickly showed the red card, but an outraged Nunez had to be carried off the field by his own teammates and will now face a three-game suspension.

"A bit of provocation here and there and definitely the wrong reaction," Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said after the match, adding that he would speak to Nunez on Tuesday.

"A clear red card, I can't deny that. Yes, he'll learn from it. Unfortunately, he's got a few games to do it now.

"That's not good for us in our specific situation, let alone, but that's the way it is."

Mexico confiscates 93 archaeological pieces that were sold in a street market

By Reuters

Mexican authorities reported on Monday that they seized 93 archaeological pieces that were clandestinely traded in an itinerant antiquities market in the capital, as part of the country's efforts to stop the trafficking of its cultural heritage.

The Ministry of Culture said in a statement that, in the operation, implemented as a result of a citizen complaint, ministerial agents captured two people from whom the objects were seized, coming from various pre-Hispanic cultures.

"Securing the assets and arresting those involved is part of the Mexican government's campaign #MiPatrimonioNoSeVende," said the Ministry of Culture, without offering details about the pieces.

Myanmar State Media Upholds Aung San Suu Kyi's Sentence on Corruption Charges

By Lauren Faith Lau

Myanmar's courts have sentenced ousted former leader Aung San Suu Kyi to six years in prison for four cases related to corruption charges, state media Global New Light of Myanmar reported on Tuesday.

State media said she was sentenced after the Anti-Corruption Commission inspected corruption cases against former State Councilor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

Among the 4 cases of corruption against her mentioned in the report are abuse of power by embezzling funds from a charity to build a house for herself and leasing government-owned land at discounted prices.

"Aung San Suu Kyi was charged under Section 55 of the Anti-Corruption Law," the media reported.

Along with Suu Kyi, three other former government officials were also sentenced to prison for similar convictions.

Suu Kyi has already been sentenced to 11 years in prison on other charges.

Covid-19 cases in China continue to rise as some sudden lockdown measures create problems for residents

By Shawn Deng, Kathleen Magramo and Teele Rebane

Hainan health authorities said the southern island province reported 1,211 local cases of covid-19 on Tuesday, of which 783 cases were identified in Sanya, where some 80,000 tourists were forced to stay in the city in response to a sudden lockdown.

Sanya airport said in a statement on Monday that it would resume "domestic commercial operation" from August 15.

Travelers can conditionally buy plane tickets if they meet certain covid-screening policies, according to the statement.

In response to the spread of covid-19 on the island, Hainan authorities fired six local officials on Sunday night for "inaction and lack of responsibility in handling the outbreak."

In the eastern Chinese city of Shanghai, an Ikea store was suddenly closed on Saturday after local authorities identified a close contact of Covid-19 at the location.

Many customers tried to escape from the store when the closure was announced.

At a press conference on Sunday, Zhao Dandan, deputy director of the Shanghai Health Commission, said the "store and affected area" would be under "closed-loop" management for two days.

People inside the circuit must undergo two days of quarantine in a government facility and five days of health surveillance.

In response to CNN's query, Ikea Shanghai confirmed on Monday that its Xuhui store was temporarily closed on August 14 and 15 due to "authorities' epidemic prevention guidelines."

According to the emailed statement, the Ikea store would resume operations on Tuesday.

Shanghai reported 3 local cases of covid-19 on Tuesday, all asymptomatic, according to the city's Health Commission.

China's Covid-19 figures rise slightly on Tuesday, with 2,368 locally transmitted Covid-19 cases reported by the country's National Health Commission.

Sporadic cases of covid-19 have also been discovered across the country.

On Tuesday, a total of 17 Chinese provinces reported new local broadcasts.
