Support Iran protests

Western democracies are plagued by internal discouragement, but they should not fail to meet the demands for freedom of those who do not have the minimum conditions of dignity

There was a certain discomfort, short-lived, when it was learned that the new wording of the Democratic Memory Law intended to recognize those tortured and the victims of police violence during the first years of democracy, until its consolidation achieved that the institutions function more transparently and rigorously.

This timeline offended some.

However, it is evident that, even after the approval of the Constitution, deeply dictatorial behavior persisted, especially when the public eye was blinded.

It should not be forgotten when we look at the countries that are now embarking on a path of slow transition from dictatorship to democracy, because in them we once again observe the incredible resistance of power to give way.

The brave protest in Belarus is still fresh,

Nicaragua or Burma, suffocated by their dictatorial authorities.

On the new international dash, the wildest regimens have found absolute driving comfort.

It is the same inconsistency that led us to think that Putin could be a worthy interlocutor.

And in the most subtle version, the one that condemns us to protect China for its economic power, without heeding the desperate cry of those who demand freedom from within.

From time to time this heartbeat of democratic transition splashes the Arab dictatorships and, very especially, Iran.

After the protests over electoral fraud came the repression.

Then came the revolt over the rise in the price of gasoline.

And now, the claims against the Moral Police, after the death of a young woman in police facilities, whose only crime was not wearing the veil correctly.

It is very possible that the protests, which have already caused more than 40 deaths, will be suppressed by the usual method.

Infiltrations, beheading of the most significant, torture and general intimidation.

The question is whether with each outburst a submerged force of contestation is added and one more gram of rottenness is added to the deterioration of these regimes.

Or maybe not

perhaps everything is forgotten and dissipated by the dynamics of just living the present in which we manage.

There are countries that function like a pressure cooker, in which by letting a part of those who can no longer take it go into exile, it is possible to appease those who have no other choice but to stay inside.

The question is whether the Arab springs left the embers of a transition latent in the bowels of those countries.

The depressing failure in all of them of the aspirations of the younger generations we do not know if it has led them to passive fatalism, where acceptance is the only recipe, in the style of Afghanistan after the painful withdrawal.

It could happen that under the authoritarian boot the anthill of resistance is alive.

Could occur.

We would then witness the reversal of the sad panorama of the last decade, in which military coups, the victories of the repressors and the perpetuation of authoritarianism have multiplied.

Western democracies are plagued by internal discouragement, but they should not fail to attend to the demand for freedom of those who do not have the minimum conditions of dignity.
