Lyon: where to put down your Christmas tree after the end of the year celebrations?

2023-01-04T10:59:22.377Z

Since Wednesday, 198 collection points have opened in the metropolis of Lyon (Rhône) to drop off your Christmas tree. A measure that helps to fight against illegal dumping.

It is not always easy to know what to do with your Christmas tree once Christmas Eve is over when you live far from a recycling center.

To facilitate their abandonment after the end of year celebrations, the metropolis of Lyon (Rhône) renewed in 2023 its operation to collect Christmas trees throughout its territory.

From January 4 to 18, 198 points will thus be disseminated in 67 municipalities and districts of the community.

They will be added to the 19 recycling centers also open to collect Christmas trees.

In all these places are accepted:

  • Natural fir trees, with or without a wooden base (cross, stick, etc.),

  • Handicap international

    bags

    ,

  • Light brown cornstarch bags,

  • “ Ok Compost

    compostable bags

Conversely, are not accepted:

  • All other bags (e.g. plastic bags),

  • plastic trees,

  • Flocked natural trees,

  • Garlands and other decorations,

  • Plastic or earthen pots,

Implemented since 2007, the measure makes it possible to fight against unauthorized dumping which leads to an additional cost of treatment for the community.

The treatment of a fir tree deposited outside the collection points costs ten times more than those left in the points provided by the metropolis.

During the first year, 20 tons of fir trees were collected to be recycled within the centers of the two community composting centers.

Last year, this figure had risen to 337 tonnes.
