Farmers of the western countryside in Homs governorate started harvesting vegetable crops grown in greenhouses and marketing their production in the local market, despite the difficulties that hindered the cultivation process, including the high prices of agricultural work requirements, while the Homs Agriculture Directorate estimated the production of 12,715 tons of vegetables in greenhouses during the current agricultural season. .
The Director of Agriculture, Eng. Younis Hamdan, explained in a statement to SANA that the total number of greenhouses planted with vegetables in the governorate amounts to 11,555 with an area of two million and 447 thousand square meters, most of which are in the villages of the western countryside, indicating that it includes the cultivation of several types of crops, most notably strawberries, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, beans and eggplants.
He added: Strawberry cultivation ranks first among protected crops, as the number of strawberry-cultivated homes is 9,473 with an estimated production of 7,200 tons, while tomatoes come second with a total of 1,652 houses and an estimated production of more than 4,600 tons, then cucumbers with a production amount exceeding 850 tons, pointing to Modest production of eggplant, beans and peppers.
For their part, a number of farmers, including Abu Ahmad al-Shamali from the village of Arida in the western countryside of Homs, indicated that they have been growing protected vegetables for thirty years, and they constitute a basic resource for farmers and provide part of the need of the local market, especially strawberries, explaining that the harvesting and marketing operations began a while ago and continue until a month next June and that the average production per house is estimated at 2 tons in the event that it is not exposed to diseases or frost waves that greatly affect production and quality.
