Stefan Schnack has given up his municipal council mandate after 27 years.

He also resigned from the Burgener list of citizens.

He is disappointed in the board.

Burggen - "I'm not offended, I'm deeply hurt," emphasizes Stefan Schnack in an interview with the local newspaper.

It's not about the fact that he didn't get something.

But he was disappointed that he was not spoken to openly, that his son's application for isolated exemption - to erect a metal fence instead of a wooden fence in the Schwarzkreuzstraße/Lechhalde construction area - was rejected by the municipal council without having previously expressed any concerns to him.

The topic was discussed at the December 1 meeting, which Schnack was unable to attend for professional reasons.

On December 5, Schnack announced his resignation, which the municipal council now had to approve.

Mayor Sandra Brendl-Wolf soberly presented the agenda item on Thursday.

Stefan Schnack was not present because he was still emotionally affected, as he explained when asked by the local newspaper.

Gabriele Höfler reads a letter from Stefan Schnack to the Burggener municipal council

Before it came to the vote, Gabriele Höfler took the floor.

"I thought about it a lot," she explained.

Of course, you shouldn't take yourself too seriously, but Stefan Schnack's resignation was dramatic for you personally.

After the former mayor Joseph Schuster, he is now going too.

"After 27 years, he can't do it anymore." That's why she decided to read out a letter to the local councillors, in which Schnack describes his reasons for resigning.

Schnack also explains that it's not about him, but about the way the decision was made.

After his son had submitted the application, he tried to describe his view of things to his fellow committee members – “no more and no less”.

And: "Other municipal councils did that too when they had a building project," says Schnack.

He couldn't find anything reprehensible about it.

A local councilor accused him of using the committee's e-mail distribution list for communication.

There was talk of unsightly influence.

Incomprehensible to Schnack.

Municipal council “never just on the side”

It is okay that the application was denied.

But Schnack would have expected people to talk to him personally beforehand.

The behavior of local councils threw him off track.

Even more so where there was an “analogous case in the past, in which a different decision was made.” Equal treatment should apply to everyone – it hurts that this is apparently no longer the case for the Schnack family, Schnack writes in the letter.

For 27 years he tried to get involved with heart and mind.

Despite the demanding everyday practical work, he "never did the job just on the side," says Schnack.

Schnack was also deputy mayor from 2008 to 2011.

A former council colleague wrote to him that emotions had no place in the committee, but he believes that to be wrong, says Schnack.

It is only human to let emotions guide you.

Former mayor Josef Schuster comments on the resignation

Josef Schuster came to a meeting for the first time after his resignation due to health reasons and, as a former mayor, asked to also say a few words about Stefan Schnack's farewell.

He actually hoped that Schnack himself would be present, to whom he would have liked to have presented a bottle of champagne as a thank you for his commitment - "actually a drink for celebratory occasions", but in this case it should be understood as appreciation.

Schnack had "brought half his life to the municipal council", acted for the benefit of all, committed himself far beyond the fulfillment of his duties and "was straightforward in his way," said Schuster.

He always appreciated the "constructive and loyal cooperation" with Schnack.

Finally, Schnack wished the municipal council the best of luck for the future and gave them the saying of St. Angela Merici in his letter: “Appreciate one another, help one another, endure one another.” Should the municipal council consider honoring his long commitment, he would he also made it clear right away that he didn't want that.

"I'm done with it," says Schnack.

He also resigned from the list of citizens.

It would actually have been Josef Schuster's turn to move up.

The former mayor declined for health reasons.

However, the following successors, who had received the most votes in the 2020 local elections, also declared their resignation: Max Höfler, Stephanie Schuster and Franz Wölfle.

Reasons were not given at the meeting.

Finally, Nico Haak accepted the position.

He was sworn in by Mayor Sandra Brendl-Wolf on Thursday evening and welcomed by all municipal councils with a handshake.

Haak took over Schnack's seat on the finance committee and the deputy roles in the planning and environmental committee and the VG assembly.
