Spanish soccer player Santi Mina has been sentenced to four years in prison after being found guilty of sexual abuse.
The 26-year-old striker from first division club Celta Vigo can still appeal.
Celta have taken the player out of the squad as a precaution pending the finalization of the appeal process.
Disciplinary proceedings have also been launched to determine what action the club can take.
Prosecutors had asked for eight years in prison for Mina, and the victim's lawyers for nine and a half years.
Second accused acquitted
David Goldar, who plays for second division club Ibiza, was found not guilty after being charged as an accomplice.
The woman's lawyer had asked for four and a half years in prison for him.
The woman accused Mina of raping her in a mobile home near a nightclub in 2017.
Her attorney said Goldar did nothing to stop Mina from committing the rape.
Mina and Goldar said the woman consented to the sexual activity.
At the time of the incident, Mina was playing for Valencia.
In 2019 he returned to his youth club in Vigo.
He has scored seven goals for the club this season.
