Twelve animals were stolen, during the night from Sunday to Monday, in this zoo in Drôme. The manager suspects the work of traffickers.

An astonishing theft has occurred in the Drôme.

In the night from Sunday to Monday, the Upie zoo was burgled, despite the security of the buildings, reports France Bleu.

It was the wife of the park manager, responsible for the primate sector, who made the discovery on Monday morning.

She found the shelter of the lipped tamarins and lemurs almost entirely empty, with the exception of one animal.

The two stolen tamarins arrived at the zoo in May, as part of a rare species conservation program.

“It was months and years of upstream work to get a brand new building out of the ground,” the manager complained to the local radio station.

As for the lemurs, of which 10 of the 11 present were stolen, they had been at the zoo for two years.

One of them is old and "requires special care," says the park on its Facebook page.

No doubt animal trafficking

According to the manager of the animal park, it would probably be a burglary carried out by traffickers.

“It was an apparently well organized commando (…).

We are talking about lemurs weighing several kilos and there are no facilities other than zoos that can accommodate them properly, ”he told France Bleu.

A complaint was lodged with the gendarmerie of Chabeuil, specifies the radio. The manager of the zoo is afraid of not seeing his animals again given the nature of the burglary, although he still hopes that witnesses can provide information.
