South Africa: Manhunt after kidnapping of 6-year-old boy

The child was abducted outside his home in a suburb of Cape Town, sparking a manhunt across the country.


A manhunt was launched in South Africa on Wednesday after a 6-year-old boy was kidnapped on his way to school in a suburb of Cape Town early in the morning, police said.

"Six suspects fled with the victim and have not yet been arrested," local police said in a statement.

An investigation, considered "sensitive", has been opened.

Missing boy: The Kensington CPF says police are currently tracking two vehicles that were allegedly involved in the kidnapping of Shanawaaz Asghar.

Shanawaaz Asghar was kidnapped outside the family home in Kensington, a northern Cape suburb.

"He was walking with his father, brother and sister to their car in the yard in front of their house when he was abducted," said a police source.

The little boy was dressed in his navy blue school uniform.

No reason has been disclosed so far.

South Africa has one of the highest crime rates in the world.

The number of kidnappings more than doubled in the first quarter of this year (3,306 cases) compared to the previous year, according to police statistics.
