Aviv Geffen makes headlines in the United Kingdom.
In a headline on the popular website of the British Guardian newspaper, the musician is described as "a rock star who has returned from his past opinions and moved closer to the right, after treating the settlers as his brothers."
During a performance held last week by Gefen in the Bethel settlement, he asked for forgiveness from the audience and called for unity: "We were separated for all kinds of reasons, I wanted to please my audience and I spoke out of ignorance. I want to ask you for forgiveness out of love and unity."
Gefen said at the concert, with a cap on his head and the great Hasidic singer Avraham Farid by his side: "Many friends helped me on this journey. One of them is my friend Ayelet Shaked who told me: 'Aviv, open up to the world, open up to people, to their opinions, accept them, treat them and respect them . I want to thank her for opening my eyes. We are true brothers and our love is not geographical love but love in the heart. Thank you very much for inviting me here. I love you."
An article in the Guardian states that Gefen, "who was previously a symbol of the peace movement in Israel, caused controversy when he apologized for his views in the past during a concert in a settlement in the occupied West Bank. This can be seen as a cultural milestone symbolizing Israel's approach to the right and placing another nail in the coffin of the peace legacy of The assassinated Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, with whom Geffen was friends."
It was also written that Gefen told the settlers that he had gone through a personal process at the end of which his eyes were opened and that in the past he had acted "out of ignorance".
The article also quotes Yitzhak Rabin's former spokesman, Uri Darumi, who criticized the apology from Aviv Gefen.
"Rabin must be turning over in his grave. The last thing Rabin would do is bow down to the settlers. I'm sure he would say harsh things against it."
