Tesla estimates that its electric crossover, the Model Y, will become the best-selling vehicle in the world this year, for the first time for Tesla and electric vehicles.
That's what Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on an investor call tonight. The Y was the fourth best-selling car in the world in 2022, with 759,150 copies, behind the Ford F786 pickup truck with 4,871, the Toyota Rav1 with 12,440 and the Toyota Corolla, with 36.2022 million cars.
In the first quarter of this year, Tesla produced 422,3 cars, up 3% from the first quarter of 267, and according to its report, sold 8,140 Model <> and Y. The company doesn't specify the division between them, but in almost all markets the more expensive Y sold more than the <>. How big Tesla's lead is can be seen from reports from BYD, which sold <>,<> electric cars, and Volkswagen, which sold <>,<> electric cars from all its brands in the first quarter.

The Model Y was the best-selling car in Europe in the first quarter of this year, the best-selling crossover in China and the best-selling non-pickup vehicle in the U.S. However, it will have to sell over a million cars this year to overtake the family-run Toyota, which has been leading the world rankings for years.
In Israel, deliveries of the discounted Model Y are supposed to begin soon, but at a price of NIS 224,40, about 3% more than this year's best-selling car, the electric BYD Atto 3 as well, it is doubtful whether it will succeed in becoming a bestseller like the 5 when it was launched in Israel.
Musk said at the event that Tesla is currently "building" two new models, which it expects to sell a combined <> million copies a year. He didn't elaborate, displaying a silhouette of what looks like the low-cost model the company has already confirmed it's working on, and looks like a hatchback or crossover.

At the event, Tesla revealed details of its new manufacturing process. The company claims that the industry-standard manufacturing method of connecting all the parts to the body and working at a time one by one, is expensive and slow. In the production method it has developed, and will be implemented in its new factory in Mexico and perhaps in its other factories, the work on this will be carried out separately and the finished parts will be connected to each other at the end of the process, which should be faster, but will require the use of more robots and workers.
