A magnitude 7.2 earthquake shook Haiti today (Saturday), with local reports of casualties and extensive damage.
According to the Geological Survey of the United States, the epicenter was eight kilometers from the town of Petit Tru de Nippes, about 150 kilometers west of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and ten kilometers deep.
The noise sent top waves across the area, leading to a tsunami alert.
The magnitude of the quake today is stronger than the one that destroyed the island more than a decade ago.
On January 12, 2010, hundreds of thousands of people were killed and injured when a magnitude 7 earthquake shook the Caribbean island.
Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, is in the midst of an acute political crisis following the assassination of President Jubilee Moyes in early July.
