The epicenter was located 12 kilometers northeast of Saint-Louis du Sud, in the south of the country.
The tremor has been felt throughout the country and material damage has already been registered in the cities of Jérémie and Los Cayos, according to several images published by witnesses in the area.
The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has issued a tsunami warning "that can reach one or three meters" above sea level.
The earthquake occurred at 8.29 local time (12.29 GMT) and had a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the USGS report.
In multiple videos shared online, residents filmed the ruins of several concrete buildings, including a church where a ceremony was reportedly taking place in the commune of Les Anglais, 200 kilometers southwest of Port-au-Prince.
