Massive casualties and widespread devastation are expected, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
It is the most recent blow to the country, which has not yet fully recovered from the 2010 earthquake and is in the midst of political instability following the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse during an attack on his private residence in July.

A 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti on Saturday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
A tsunami alert was issued and there have been deaths and damage in Haiti after the earthquake, Haitian Civil Protection told CNN.
A magnitude 5.2 aftershock occurred shortly thereafter, 17 km north-northwest of Chantal, Haiti, according to the USGS. It had a depth of 10 kilometers.
