The death toll from the earthquake that struck southwest Haiti earlier this week, with a magnitude of 7.2 on the Richter scale, has risen to 1,419.

The AP quoted the country's Civil Protection Agency as saying that, "so far, 1,419 bodies have been counted, most of them in the South Governorate, with 1,133 bodies, while the number of injured reached more than six thousand, and serious cases were transferred from them by helicopters."

The earthquake caused the displacement of thousands, the destruction of more than seven thousand homes, and damage to about five thousand other homes, as well as hospitals, schools, offices and churches.

A previous toll had stated that 1,297 people had been killed and 5,700 others wounded.

The poorest country on the American continent still remembers the devastating earthquake that occurred on January 12, 2010, which destroyed the capital and many cities, killing more than 200,000 people at the time, as well as displacing one and a half million residents.
