Sudan announced on Monday that it was renewing diplomatic relations with Iran after a break of several years. Sudan has been embroiled in a civil war between the army and the Rapid Relief Forces (RSF) militia.

According to the Sudanese Foreign Ministry, "It has been decided to renew diplomatic relations between the two countries in order to serve the interests of both sides. This follows a series of high-level contacts that took place in recent months."

Sudan severed diplomatic relations with Iran several years ago as a sign of solidarity with Saudi Arabia. In March, Riyadh and Tehran renewed relations between the two countries, and diplomatic missions were later established.

During the regime of Sudanese dictator al-Bashir, Sudan was used for Iranian arms smuggling and Hamas headquarters operated in its territory. Foreign media attributed several Israeli attacks against these targets.

In April 2019, dictator Omar al-Bashir was overthrown and replaced by a joint military and civilian regime. About three years later, in January 2021, Sudan joined the Abraham Accords and later ended the boycott situation with Israel. The Sudanese regime also took over Hamas assets in the country. The process of upgrading relations between the countries was supposed to continue, but six months ago a civil war broke out in the country.
