Sergeant Major Uriah Bayer, a 20-year-old Magellan fighter from Ma'a lot Tarshiha, died yesterday in hospital after being wounded in battle in the southern Gaza Strip last Thursday. Uriah is survived by his parents, a brother and two sisters.
The story of Uriah's family is extraordinary. The Bayer family is a family of German Christians who immigrated to Israel and established a retirement home for Holocaust survivors in order to help them and atone for the horrors they endured at the hands of the Nazis.

As mentioned, the family is not Jewish and they are not entitled to citizenship, but its sons enlist in the army and many of them serve as combatants and officers in elite units.
Bayer was injured last week in an incident in the Khan Yunis area of Gaza and evacuated in serious condition to Soroka Hospital in Beer Sheva. The doctors fought for his life but were forced to pronounce him dead. His funeral will take place at the Ma'a lot Tarshiha military cemetery.
