Sergeant Major Uriah Bayer, a 20-year-old Magellan fighter from Ma'a lot Tarshiha, died yesterday in hospital after being wounded in battle in the southern Gaza Strip last Thursday. Uriah is survived by his parents, a brother and two sisters.

The story of Uriah's family is extraordinary. The Bayer family is a family of German Christians who immigrated to Israel and established a retirement home for Holocaust survivors in order to help them and atone for the horrors they endured at the hands of the Nazis.
