Nuclear: another six-month delay for the Flamanville EPR

The reactor should not be put on the network before mid-2024. EDF anticipates an additional cost of 500 million euros.

While the facilities are almost ready, EDF is facing a new challenge that is tougher than expected.

The electrician was therefore forced to announce a further delay of six months.

The commercial commissioning of the latest French reactor is now scheduled for mid-2024.

When work was launched, the EPR was scheduled to start in 2012. Depending on the difficulties encountered, this date was successively postponed to 2017, then to 2018 (due to problematic welding), then to 2022 (for the same reasons), then at the end of 2023 (for a piping problem as well).

And now in mid-2024.

This new postponement will cost the operator 500 million euros, for a total bill of 13.2 billion euros.

An unexpected problem

EDF encountered a new, unforeseen problem this summer.

Until then, the re-welding operations had gone off without a hitch.
