The city of Garching is pushing hard to create new living space.
The communication zone and living on the Schleissheim Canal are the two construction projects that will keep the municipality busy in the coming years.
Housing mix from home to cooperative building

The "communication zone" is intended to connect the town center with the university campus.
After years of tough negotiations, the signing of the urban development contract in August finally marked the start of the construction of 1250 houses and apartments on the 31 hectare area, which will provide a new home for around 3000 people.
Subsidized housing, community-oriented housing projects, apartment buildings and at the same time single and multi-family houses ensure the mix of ecologically and socially sustainable urban development.
At the end of 2020 the development plan “Schleissheim Canal” was presented, the new housing estate for 1650 citizens will not only upgrade the district of Hochbrück, but also supply it with numerous shops, local suppliers and service providers.
Although construction is scheduled to start in 2022, the city council laid the foundation stone at the end of last year.
In addition to the adoption of the Garching residential model, the former local model, the city council has also spoken out in favor of supporting housing cooperatives.

“Fair Trade” is being expanded
The “Fair Trade City” banner has been hanging over the entrance to the town since July.
The city is the 690th municipality in Germany that is committed to the 2030 Agenda and wants to promote decent working conditions in order to fight poverty.
It's about health, climate protection, sustainable consumption and production.
This will also have an impact on the festivals in the coming years, where traders with fair trade products are welcome.
Since then, there have been fair trade drinks and coffee for employees and guests in the town hall, and more and more fair trade should gradually move into the city.
Will the community center drama take place this year?
Perhaps it will work out in 2021 that the community center drama will come to an end.
Constant cost increases and constant further bad news as well as construction sites arose, where one already believed to have reached the goal in mid-2020.
The same thing happened in the restaurant, the guests literally remained seated on the forecourt after constant readjustments were necessary here too.

In the case of the restaurant there were cost increases of 55 percent, in the community center by 33 percent compared to the original approval.
A total of 16 million euros is then on the bill.

Bürgerpark: Another part is being realized
Adventure playground, boules alley and multifunctional area, these are the three components of the newly designed public park.
The two boules lanes are ready, the play equipment for different age groups has been installed.
Since a further section is processed every year, the next step is the multifunctional area.
Cycle expressway: The money has been promised, the route has yet to be negotiated
It should be a fast cycle path connection from the state capital via Unterschleißheim and Garching to Freising.
Federal Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer came to Garching in August 2020 with a funding commitment of 2.3 million euros.
If things progress quickly, construction could start in 2021, but the city councils must also agree on the route proposed in the feasibility study.
It quickly became clear in the city council that the suggestion from the district administration regarding a tour of the Hochbrücker industrial park was not well received.
Garching has an important say in what the “jointly developed variant” should look like and therefore still has a strenuous piece of work ahead of him in the coming year.
This also includes clarifying questions relating to maintenance, traffic safety or lighting.
Two big anniversaries are coming up
VfR Garching (100 years) and the Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium (50 years) will celebrate round birthdays in 2021.
The corona pandemic does not allow any specific statements as to whether and if so, how it will be celebrated.
For the director of the WHG, Armin Eifertinger, it is clear that there will be something, "but there is currently no big party in sight."
VfR board member Uwe Cygan is hoping for a festive evening during the citizens' week.
This is already anchored in the cultural program.
"We are hoping for the planned 50th Citizens' Week with a street festival from July 1st to 11th, with some restrictions if necessary," said cultural advisor Thomas Gotterbarm.

A new building for VHS AND NBH
The two institutions, adult education center and neighborhood help, received a Christmas present, and the center for Garching's cultural and social life is being built on Telschowstrasse.
The plans are in place, everything is going quickly, and construction work can start in 2021.
