In the middle of the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan, Egyptian authorities executed nine people, including an 82-year-old man.

You are believed to be responsible for the deaths of several police officers in 2013.

The Egyptian media report.

The nine executed belong to a group of 183 originally convicted.

All were sentenced to death in a first trial, and most of them were overturned in a later trial - a group of 20 convicts remained.

From this group, eleven other people are now waiting for their death penalty.

The convicts are supporters of the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood.

In August 2013 they are said to have stormed a police station in the Cairo suburb of Kerdasa near the pyramids of Gisa and killed eleven police officers.

Ten other people were injured.

The Egyptians overthrew the long-term ruler Husni Mubarak in 2011 and then elected the Muslim Brother Mohammed Morsi as the first president.

In a coup in 2013, the former field marshal Abdel Fattah el-Sisi drove him out of office, causing unrest between security forces and supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood.

The Kerdasa incident took place around this time.

Since then, Sisi has led Egypt with a hard hand: He has passed numerous brutal laws, tens of thousands of opposition members have been locked in prisons.

The number of executions has tripled

"The executions are chilling evidence of the Egyptian authorities' disregard for the right to life and obligations under international law," said Philipp Luther, director of research and engagement on the Middle East and North Africa at Amnesty International.

As recently as last week, Amnesty International found in a report on the death penalty that the number of recorded executions in Egypt tripled in 2020.

While the use of the death penalty is declining worldwide, at least 107 people were executed in Egypt last year - the country ranks third behind China and Iran among the countries with the most executions.
