The governor of Puerto Rico, Pedro Pierluisi, signed a decree this Wednesday that establishes the mandatory booster vaccination against covid-19 for personnel working in the health and education sectors.

By next January 15, 2022, people over 18 years of age who are already vaccinated and who work in these sectors must have been vaccinated with their booster doses.

The mandate applies to those who work in health sector facilities - regardless of their functions - as well as to teaching staff, non-teaching staff and contractors of schools, educational centers and universities, whether public or private, according to the decree.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), anyone with the full dose of Pfizer or Moderna vaccination can give the booster at least six months after complete your main vaccination schedule against covid-19.

In the case of Johnson & Johnson (Janssen), individuals may be given the booster dose at least two months after completing their initial vaccination schedule.

Recently, the CDC reported that the omicron variant is predominant among new cases in the United States.

Due to the upturn in positive cases of covid-19 reported in Puerto Rico, Pierluisi also reported the cancellation in person of the end-of-year activity scheduled to take place in the San Juan Convention Center District, and which he expected an approximate attendance of 10,000 people.

The event will be held virtually, without an audience, and with the programming of the annual Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin 'Eve special, on the US network ABC.

"As I had indicated, I am vigilant in the face of the situation with covid-19 and the new omicron variant, which is already present on our island.

As is public knowledge, the positivity rate has continued to rise, which has led me to establish new mandates to reduce infections, as well as to initially require booster dose vaccination in the health and care sectors. education, "Pierluisi said in a statement.

The government explained that "this judicious and reasonable decision will not affect the participation of artists or television broadcasting to more than 18 million viewers nationally and worldwide."

It was also reported that Mariela Vallines, director of the Convention District, will later be offering more details about what the event will be like without a public in-person.

On Sunday, Pierluisi had signed a decree that establishes that every person in Puerto Rico who attends a mass activity in open or closed establishments will have to present evidence of having completed their vaccination process and, in addition, a negative test (PCR or antigens) made 48 hours or less before the event.

According to the press office of the governorate, the decree comes into force this Wednesday.

The rule establishes that in any activity where there are more than 500 people, the organizers will have to coordinate with the Puerto Rico Health Department the protocol to follow to guarantee that the activity is safe for the health of the attendees.

This includes requiring the use of a mask throughout the activity, and determining whether the presence of children under 5 years of age is appropriate.

This is the second large mass event that has been canceled in recent days in Puerto Rico.

Last week, the final of the Miss World International contest was postponed, due to the confirmation of several positive cases of covid-19 among some participants and staff of the working group.
