A 66-year-old man died Tuesday in the Pyrenees, said the gendarmerie on Wednesday.
As he reached a summit, a patch of snow broke off under the skier and the snow flow swept him away for a hundred yards, then buried him.
“His passage probably caused the rupture of the plate.
He was swept away in the landslide and caught in the snow, ”said the Hautes-Pyrénées gendarmerie.
The weather conditions were unfavorable for the skier: there had been a lot of wind the previous days and snow had accumulated in this area.
This Wednesday again, Météo-France placed four Alpine departments on orange vigilance for avalanche risk.

This is the fifth skier to die in the mountains since Sunday.
On Tuesday, a 51-year-old man died in Savoie after being swept away in the late afternoon by an avalanche triggered on the Aussois resort.
The same day, another fifty-year-old lost his life in a snowfall, this time in Isère.

On Monday, mountain rescue services learned that a young 23-year-old cross-country skier had died in an avalanche in the Grandes Rousses massif, in the town of La Grave (Hautes-Alpes).
And Sunday, in Savoie, a 31-year-old ski instructor was buried under three meters of snow in Arc 2000, while hiking with friends.
