The human engineering is very good, it is easy to adjust and adjust the driving position and operate the air conditioning and multimedia system, as with the sister Kia and its Sorento, Hyundai seems to have found the golden path in combination with physical controls and touch buttons and screens to produce a comfortable and safe combination.

Less tall drivers will like the A-beam (front beam) due to its sharp angle that reaches right to the middle of the door, which requires lowering the head at the entrance, but once you sit inside - the clearance is excellent and the visibility is very good.

The growth at the wheelbase by a single centimeter is one part of the story here, the new design for the cabin that adds 2.6 cm to the rear seats and their structure creates excellent space for the rear seats.

These also get air conditioning vents and separate climate control, two USB sockets and a 12V socket (at all trim levels - inhale).

Less aim for the block of plastic that rises in the rear window and takes up a lot of the observation surface.

The 515-liter trunk is spacious and has a reasonable cargo opening.

But slightly damaged due to the structure of the wheelhouses which make it narrow in its deepest part, and except for a 12V socket devoid of unusual flashes in the means of anchoring in it.

At the level of finish tested "elite" which is the highest, the equipment list is very long, we will not go over it all but the main things like wireless charging, steering wheel control, panoramic sunroof, remote propulsion, leather upholstery, electric driver seat (only) with heating.

Notable in their absence were: front parking sensors and electrical closure to the trunk.

In the safety sections the list includes automatic braking including cross traffic, lane departure correction, "dead space" vehicle warning, rear cross vehicle warning, adaptive cruise control (only at the two high trim levels - disappointing), rear seat child prevention system, cushion Air between the driver and passenger and more.

And while the exterior and interior design have elevated to new districts, under the hood there is no real progress.

Hyundai calls their "new" engines smartstream and boasts a host of improvements - but these are the same engines that served the previous generation.

The offer starts with the 2.0-liter atmospheric version with a 156 hp premium finish level (archaic relic, almost historic) and continues to the 180-liter turbo 180 hp engine of the test car.

The performance is therefore not exciting, you will not find dizzying accelerations here and no explosive power from its 180 horses and 27 kg. The figure of 8.8 seconds per 100 km / h does not translate into a fast vehicle or one that performs detours and unusual pace on mountain roads .

The one that still makes it harder to make the best use of is the dual-clutch gearbox, the Korean one is still less fluent than the one you'll find in Volkswagen products for example (and these and those are less good than a good planetary gearbox).

This is reflected in the speed at which it puts the driver in the right gear at the right moment, and in the function not smooth enough in slow driving.

The place where the Tucson makes a real leap compared to the previous generation is in road customs.

The previous generation was also relatively comfortable thanks to the soft calibration of the suspensions but when it came to business leadership it was quite disgraceful.

Anything beyond turning a calm and moderate rudder takes him out of his comfort zone. Treat him like a normal person and he will be whatever you want. But this time the story is completely different, that good comfort has been improved and it also copes well with small fractures and disruptions in the asphalt, the problem that remains is mainly wind noise from the B-beam area (middle beam) above a speed of 120 km / h.

But the surprise was mostly on the winding road, where, with very good restraint to the chassis and multi-link rear suspension, the Tucson surprised with very, very good road habits not only in relation to the outgoing generation (come on, the continuum was very low) but also in Gippon objective metrics average.

The steering wheel is fast and precise, its ability to enter the turn in a confident manner and also to deal with the tightening of the steering wheel or the relaxation of the accelerator pedal during a very impressive turn.

It does not enter the gates of the definition of "fun to drive" (like the Peugeot 3008 and Mazda CX5 for example) as much as such a vehicle can be, but certainly not the lukewarm package of the outgoing generation.



Fuel consumption throughout the test days stood at about 9.5 km, far from impressing and further sharpening the necessity of the hybrid propulsion versions and charging socket for this model, these are expected to arrive towards the end of the year.

Summary

After driving the new Hyundai Tucson, it can be said that it is a well-deserved competitor among the best in its group.

The gaps in performance, material quality, human engineering, comfort level and demeanor have closed and even created some significant strengths to its credit, while engine and fuel consumption areas still need improvement.
