In San Francisco, the police wanted to control an autonomous car.

The video of the bewildered officers went viral on social media.

San Francisco (USA) – Similar to the internal combustion engine, the human driver could become obsolete in the near future.

After all, he is prone to errors, gets tired and, in case of doubt, costs money if it is a taxi or similar passenger transport.

In the future, cars should therefore drive autonomously.

This is already a reality in San Francisco, where companies like Waymo are already letting their taxis onto the streets without security drivers.

The same applies to Cruise.

Their vehicles also drive employees through the city on the Pacific.

A fact that the local police haven't quite got used to yet.

Officials from the San Francisco Police Department tried to control a cruise vehicle on April 2, as reported by 24auto.de.

Police want to control autonomous car: Video goes viral

A video of the control is now circulating on Instagram and Twitter and has been seen there millions of times.

It shows the converted Chevrolet Bolt stopping at a red light.

An officer gets out of the police vehicle behind and looks into the vehicle.

But then he goes back, probably because he didn't see a driver.

Cruise's autonomous vehicle caused a lot of confusion among police officers.

At that moment, the traffic light turns green again and Cruise’s autonomous car drives off.

For a moment it appears as if the vehicle is fleeing from the police.

But the vehicle only drives to a safe place for inspection.

But it gets even stranger: Because not only one policeman approaches, but two.

A third one comes along a little later.

Much to the delight of the surrounding observers, who follow the inspection with amusement.

Police want to control autonomous car: officer contacts Cruise

However, officials don't really seem to know how to react to Cruise's autonomous car.

The subsidiary of General Motors provides a corresponding explanatory video on YouTube.

An officer tries to open the car door.

They walk around the vehicle several times and look in before a police officer picks up the cell phone.

It is not clear who he is on the phone with, but it is assumed that it is Cruise.

At least that's what a response from the company on Twitter suggests: "An officer contacted the cruise team and no subpoena was issued."

However, it is unclear why the car was stopped.

However, the video does suggest that the Bolt's lighting may have been the reason.

Even though it's night, the headlights are off when the officers of the San Francisco Police Department check the vehicle.

But not only among the people on site did the action cause congestion and amusement.

Numerous users also enjoyed the video on Instagram and Twitter.

  • “This is what happens when innovation meets stupidity.

Will they arrest and impound the car because of their mistake?”

  • "When it drove off as soon as they walked back to their car, that was damn funny... too bad it didn't just keep going."

  • "Do the cops in SF really still drive Crown Vics?"

  • "You'd think cops in SF are tech savvy... Cruise made thousands of trips there..."

  • "The future is now"

  • "That's hilarious."

  • “Don’t driverless vehicles have to obey all traffic rules?

Why did the police stop it?”

  • "Oh man!

    That was funny.

I can't imagine what's going on in his head when he doesn't see a driver."

  • "Seems like the traffic cop job won't exist in 10 years."
