According to the first elements of the investigation which have yet to be verified, Sunday, shortly after 8 p.m., near the Place de la République (Paris XI), the man had been reported as in possession of a weapon.

He allegedly first threatened a dog with a handgun.

As the two patrolling police officers approached him, he turned to them, pointing his gun at them.

The police then allegedly opened fire.

According to police sources at BFMTV and Le Figaro, the weapon held by the man was dummy, of the airsoft type.

A second investigation was opened, for "attempted murder of a person holding public authority", and entrusted to the second district of the Paris judicial police.
