Less than 24 hours after the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse, Haiti is in a state of shock.

Port-au-Prince airport is closed and the border with the Dominican Republic cordoned off.

The director general of the police, Léon Charles, announced that

“four mercenaries were killed and two captured”,

while three police officers who had been taken hostage were released.

According to him, the fighting continued Thursday to neutralize the other members of the heavily armed commando which entered the residence of the president.

Jovenel Moïse was killed by 12 bullets in his room.

His wife, Martine, was shot twice and is being treated in a Miami hospital.

His condition is said to be stable.

Their daughter, Jomarlie, managed to hide during the assault, according to the magistrate in charge of the case, Carl Henry Destin.

The president's room and office were ransacked.

It is still unclear how such a commando managed to enter the president's private residence without a reaction from his close guard.
