The discount chain Aldi has big plans in the UK. In the next two years, one will open 100 more branches in the Kingdom, said Aldi. That creates 5000 new jobs.
Aldi currently operates around 840 stores in the UK, and by 2025 it is expected to be around 1,200. In the capital London alone, the discounter wants to increase the number of stores from 40 to over 100 within two years.
The threatening chaos caused by the Brexit does not seem to deter Aldi. The company's UK boss, Giles Hurley, had just warned that the availability of any product could not be guaranteed if it came, as feared, to Britain's disorderly exit from the EU.
Due to the high investments in the expansion in the past year, but also because of numerous price reductions, the profit before taxes and interest in the entire group had dropped, said Aldi on. He went back by 26 percent to the equivalent of just 223 million euros. Sales rose by eleven percent due to favorable prices.
The traditional supermarkets in Britain, on the other hand, are experiencing tough times. Tesco, for example, had announced in August the cancellation of 4,500 jobs and led the tough competition - including Aldi and Lidl.
Lidl also benefits from the British appetite for low-priced shopping: The discounter announced 40 new shops in the Greater London area in June.
