Federal Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer demands that the state intervene in fuel prices of two euros or more.

If this mark is passed, politicians must have the strength to intervene, he said "Bild Live".

He could imagine measures for tax or commuter allowance.

Scheurer said that they are still a few steps away from these prices.

But if there is "a left-wing republic" after the federal elections, then "mobility will also be more expensive".

Green Chancellor candidate Annalena Baerbock called Scheuer's statements an "absolute cardboard comrade debate."

"It is perfectly clear that the change in the automotive industry is taking place primarily because everything is not regulated by price, but that there is a clear phase-out date for the fossil combustion engine," said Baerbock.

In the past few years as Minister of Transport, Scheuer had not only "sunk billions with his toll debacle, but with his idleness he also ensured that our loading station infrastructure was catastrophic across Germany," added Baerbock.

The high gasoline prices had already been discussed at the weekend.

CSU boss Markus Söder called for an increase in the commuter allowance in the event that the Union takes part in government.

For the CSU it is essential that there is a compensation for a rising CO2 price, said Söder of the "Welt am Sonntag".

Above all, "so as not to penalize rural areas".

If the price of petrol increases by ten cents, the commuter allowance has to be increased by one cent, suggested Söder.

"This is a coalition demand of the CSU, from which we will not move away." The CSU rejects a speed limit and flight bans regardless of this.

The consumer portal Verivox considers a gasoline price of two euros to be unrealistic for the time being.

It is true that the federal government's CO2 tax is a rather price-driving factor.

In order to crack the two-euro mark, the CO2 price per ton - measured in the current market environment - would have to rise to 183 euros, said a spokesman for the MDR.
