The images are hardly sustainable.

In videos posted on social networks, we can see inert children, others bloodied, in the playground of their school, near a playground.

On Wednesday, a man armed with a knife broke into a kindergarten in Beiliu, a city of 1.5 million people in southern China.

He then stabbed several minors and members of the teaching staff.

The death toll on Wednesday evening was two children killed and 16 people injured, including 14 students, the official Xinhua news agency said.

Their health is gradually improving, the news agency reported.

A suspect was quickly arrested and an investigation is underway, the same source added.

An arrest which has also been filmed and broadcast.

According to a Chinese media, "the man is 25 years old and comes from a nearby village and his motives remain unknown for the moment".

The education ministry has "urged schools across the country to strengthen the security of their institutions to prevent violators from entering campus and to conduct a general inspection and rectification to uncover security loopholes," reports the Global Time.

"Local police said the man may be mentally ill," reports Jimu News, a provincial media outlet.

A tragedy repeating itself in China

The local authorities then called on the inhabitants to donate blood, in particular to help the young victims.

Queues of residents wanting to respond to the authorities' call for solidarity have thus formed near the collection buses, as shown by pictures of Internet users present on site.

Knife attacks are common in China, a country that strictly regulates access to firearms.

Last June, a knife attack injured at least 39 people, almost all of them, at a primary school in southern China.

In September 2019, eight children died on the first day of school in the center of the country, stabbed in their establishment.

In January 2019, 20 children were injured with a hammer in Beijing in their primary school.

Two months earlier, a 20-year-old young man killed a student and injured nine others as well as two teachers at a technical school in Yunnan, a southwestern province.

In 2018, a man who stabbed nine children to death and injured 11 in northern China was sentenced to death. The Guangxi region has already been affected in January 2017 by an attack. A man injured 11 children with a kitchen knife at a preschool.
