Croatian President Zoran Milunevic lashed out at Israel, saying he had lost his sympathy for the Jewish state after the terrorist attack by Hamas terrorists on the communities near the Gaza Strip.
Milanovic was quoted by the US news website Politico as saying: "With all my sympathy for Israel, which I unfortunately lost after 15 minutes, there is no place for any flag other than the Croatian flag on our government buildings, except in very specific cases." Milanovich made the remarks in reference to the decision to place the Israeli flag on the local Foreign Ministry building, a move he called "idiotic."
"I condemn the murders of Hamas and even express disgust and loathing, but the right to self-defense does not include the right to carry out acts of revenge and kill civilians," the Croatian president said. Milanovic recently caused a stir when he called for NATO and EU flags to be lowered lower than the Croatian flag.
The role of the Croatian president, like Israel, is mostly symbolic. Milonewicz is considered to belong to the pro-Russian camp in the Balkan country and is known for his criticism of aid to Ukraine and the NATO alliance.
