Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev has died at the age of 91.
Moscow - Mikhail Gorbachev has died at the age of 91.
This is reported by the Russian news agency Tass, citing a hospital.
Nothing is currently known about the exact background.
Gorbachev was General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1985 to 1991 and President of the Soviet Union from 1990 to 1991.
The politician was valued worldwide and is still considered one of the pioneers of German unity and the end of the Cold War.
In the 1980s, Gorbachev negotiated and initiated important agreements with the USA, for example on nuclear disarmament.
