The former Soviet leader, who died on August 30, 2022 at the age of 91, told
Le Figaro
in 2019 of the revolutionary events of which he was the great midwife and how, as the Wall fell in Berlin and across the Communist bloc, the Politburo unanimously decided not to intervene.
In this written interview, he also mentioned Mitterrand's concerns, Putin's current role, Macron's initiative, which he welcomed, the need to consider Russia as a European power and to come to terms with it through the dialogue.
These are all themes he dealt with in his last book, an analysis of the challenges of our tormented times which seemed to be his political testament.
