Gorbachev was the last leader of the Soviet Union before it disintegrated, and during his tenure he instituted political and economic reforms in order to save the power's foreign relations and fading economy.
In 1990 he won the Nobel Peace Prize

The former president of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, has passed away - this was announced this evening (Tuesday) by the Interfax news agency.
Gorbachev, who was 91 when he died, was the last leader of the Soviet Union before it fell.
He was in power when the Soviet Union collapsed, promoting policies that led to the end of the Cold War in 1991.
In 1990, Gorbachev won the Nobel Peace Prize.
