Mikhail Gorbachev, the last leader of the Soviet Union before its dissolution, has died in Moscow at the age of 91, according to official statements.
Gorbachev, whose tumultuous rule was associated with the terms of perestroika and glasnost, has died after a long illness, according to official Russian news agencies.
In 1990, he was elected as the president of the Soviet Union, a position he held for just over a year.
In 1990 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for helping to end the Cold War.
