The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, paid tribute to him: "I was very sorry to hear about the passing of Mikhail Gorbachev, a one-of-a-kind statesman who changed the course of history. The president of the European Commission, Ursula van der Leyen, called Gubarchev "a trusted and respected leader".

According to her, "He played a critical role in ending the Cold War and bringing down the Iron Curtain, which led to a free Europe. This legacy will not be forgotten," she promised.
