Leaders from around the world paid tribute tonight (Wednesday) to the former leader of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, who passed away at the age of 91. Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his "deepest condolences", according to his spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, who added that the president would send a telegram of condolences to the family and friends of Gorbachev.
Member of Knesset Vladimir Bialik (Yesh Atid) wrote about Gorbachev, "I did not agree with him on many things in real time, but looking back I will forever be grateful that he tried to grant freedom to the country where I was born and raised. The man changed the world."

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, paid tribute to him: "I was very sorry to hear about the passing of Mikhail Gorbachev, a one-of-a-kind statesman who changed the course of history. He did more than any other person to bring about a peaceful end to the Cold War," he noted.
"The world has lost a huge world leader, committed and a tireless supporter of peace."
The president of the European Commission, Ursula van der Leyen, called Gubarchev "a trusted and respected leader".
According to her, "He played a critical role in ending the Cold War and bringing down the Iron Curtain, which led to a free Europe. This legacy will not be forgotten," she promised.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he always admired "the courage and integrity he showed in bringing the Cold War to a peaceful end."
He mentioned Russia's war in Ukraine and said, "During Putin's time of aggression, his tireless commitment to opening up Soviet society remains an example to us all."
