Why is the EM 2020 taking place in twelve countries?

The idea of a pan-European EM tournament goes back to former UEFA President Michel Platini. In June 2012, the Frenchman proposed for the first time to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the 2020 tournament as part of a "Euro for Europe" . Platini also argued that it would be fairer to spread the cost and organization of an EM across multiple countries .

"We play in twelve cities in twelve different countries, then each country only has to build a stadium and an airport. I think that's a great idea during the economic crisis." The fans can also be expected to commute between several countries, said Platini: "There are low-cost airlines, that's no longer a problem today."

What Platini did not say at the time: The multi-host European Championship 2020, sold as a political unification initiative, was a sport-related emergency solution. Only Ireland / Scotland / Wales and Azerbaijan / Georgia offered themselves as serious candidates - no serious alternatives for a premium product that was just inflated to 24 participants. With Turkey as the potential host, tensions at the official level are said to have arisen following the award defeats for 2012 and 2016.

Euro 2020: First sales phase for tickets completed - next tickets from December

  • The first sales phase for the EM 2020 has already been completed. The European Football Union (UEFA) started selling tickets on Wednesday, June 12, 2019. In the first phase, up to July 12, 1.5 million of the approximately 3 million tickets in total went on sale.
  • According to UEFA , 19.3 million requests were received during the first phase of sales. "By mid-August at the latest", fans who were selected by lot for one of the 51 finals should be informed. So if you haven't heard anything yet, you won't get a ticket from the first sales phase.
  • Most interested parties (1.9 million) applied in the first phase for the final of the EM 2020 in London's Wembley Stadium. Most requests for group games were received for the games in Munich and Amsterdam.
  • The next sales phase for the tickets for the games of the EURO 2020 starts in December. According to UEFA, a further 960,000 tickets will be offered in the second sales phase. This sales phase begins after the final draw on November 30, 2019. There is no specific date yet.
  • A third and final sales phase for the European Championship tickets will take place in April 2020. Because: The last four teams that qualify for the 2020 European Championship will only be known after the European Qualifiers playoffs, which will take place from March 26th to 31st.
  • All tickets are sold online (euro2020.com/tickets). There are three price categories for the final tournament. In addition, the twelve host cities are divided into two groups to take into account the purchasing power and average income of the residents. The sale of hospitality packages for all stadiums also begins on Wednesday.
  • In addition, the portals for the helper program open in all twelve cities. 12,000 volunteers are sought to help with processes such as accreditation, guest care, transport, media, ticketing, game operations and fan services.

Where will the EM 2020 take place?

The finals will be held across Europe to mark the 60th anniversary of the European Championship. The twelve host cities are Amsterdam , Baku , Bilbao , Bucharest , Budapest , Copenhagen , Dublin , Glasgow , London , Munich , Rome and St. Petersburg . Eleven stadiums have a capacity of at least 50,000 seats.

EM 2020: This is how the draw for Germany works

Euro 2020: this is how much the tickets for the European Championship cost

  • The ticket prices for the games of the EM 2020 vary depending on the venue.
  • The prices for the three group games in Munich cost 50, 125 or 185 euros, depending on the category.
  • Should the German national team qualify for the final tournament, they would complete two or three group games in the Allianz Arena.
  • The prices for the quarter-finals in Munich are 75, 145 or 225 euros - the DFB-Elf will contest this only in exceptional cases.
  • In the knockout round, the selection of national coach Joachim Löw would have to play in other countries. In Bucharest, like in Budapest and Baku, the prices for the round of 16 would be only 30, 75 or 125 euros.
  • UEFA takes into account the general price level in these countries.
  • The prices for the two semi-finals in London are 85, 195, 345 and 595 euros.
  • Ticket prices for the EURO 2020 final at Wembley Stadium will rise to 95, 295, 595 and 945 euros.

The EM 2020 will be a pan-European tournament

Platini was apparently able to convince the continental football association of the plan for a pan-European Euro 2020 effortlessly. On a website of UEFA that is now offline, it was announced in December 2012: "After the reactions of the UEFA member associations consulted in the meantime had been extremely positive, the executive in Lausanne decided on this innovative concept."

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, CEO of FC Bayern Munich, also received support for the concept of a pan-European EURO 2020. As he explained to tz in December 2012, he was particularly impressed by the cost allocation: "If you do it like this, that you might have a few games in Munich and a few in Berlin, a few in Madrid and maybe in Milan, that is large and famous stadiums in Europe, then you don’t need to create any infrastructure. You reduce the costs of a European championship to a tolerable level. "It would also have a political dimension." It would be a sign that we are now a united Europe. "

In an interview with the tz , Rummenigge also announced that he would support an application by the Munich Allianz Arena as the venue for the EURO 2020: "Munich has such a relaxed atmosphere, we have this wonderful stadium. I hear from many colleagues that it would be the best and the world's best functioning stadium in terms of infrastructure. And I think Munich can be proud of that. At least we at FC Bayern are. "

It is quite possible that discussions with FC Bayern are inevitable again in connection with the Allianz Arena as the venue for the EURO 2020. But we'll get to that ...

When does the European Football Championship 2020 begin?

  • The EM will take place from June 12 to July 12, 2020.
  • The opening game for the EURO 2020 takes place on June 12th at the Olympic Stadium in Rome.
  • The EURO 2020 finals are scheduled for July 12 at Wembley Stadium in London.

EM 2020: The venues and stadiums of the European Championship

The awarding of the venues and stadiums for the EURO 2020 involved twelve standard packages: UEFA awarded one package with three group games and one playoff game. And there was also a final package with the semi-finals and the final.

On September 19, 2014, UEFA awarded the venues for the EURO 2020:

The finals and semi-finals of the EURO 2020 will take place at Wembley Stadium in London .

The Allianz Arena in Munich will host three group matches and a quarter-final . If Germany qualifies for the EURO 2020, two group games of the DFB-Elf are guaranteed in the Allianz Arena.

Brussels has now lost the contract as the venue for the EURO 2020. The Belgian capital Brussels will not be a venue for the EURO 2020. The UEFA Executive Committee decided this at the end of 2017. The reason: constant delays in the construction of the new, around 300 million euro stadium in Brussels. Belgium should initially also be the venue for the EURO 2020.

Due to the constant delays, UEFA set a deadline of November 20, 2017 - until then, all the necessary building permits had to be sent to Nyon. According to reports, documents have been submitted, but with the inclusion as a venue for the first pan-European EURO it was nothing.

Germany was actually in the running with the Allianz Arena as the stadium for the final of the 2020 EURO. Ultimately, however, the DFB withdrew the application for the final. Because: The DFB absolutely wanted to bring the EM 2024 to Germany. Since it is unlikely that a country will receive both the European Championship final package and the European Championship 2024, DFB President Wolfgang Niersbach signaled in advance of the awarding of the venues that the German association could accommodate the English in terms of the final package. To this end, the FA could, in turn, strengthen the back of the DFB in Germany regarding EM 2024 in a deal.

Germany has won the 2024 European Championship. One reason for this was probably the stadiums and the infrastructure in Germany, which had already proven themselves at the 2006 World Cup. Unlike in the case of the competitor Turkey, no new stadiums have to be built in Germany. Most of the German venues are relatively new or were renovated before the World Cup. We offer an overview of all venues at the European Championship in Germany.

Euro 2020: who is qualified?

The qualification for the EURO 2020 was rather confusing. The two best teams should qualify directly in ten groups. A total of 20 participants for the European Championship were identified as part of the "normal" European Championship qualification.

Four more places for the European Championship 2020 will only be allocated three months before the tournament - via playoffs in the various divisions of the new "Nations League" - another competition that ex-president Michel Platini wanted so much.

Teams can move up and down in the Nations League. A winner is chosen in odd years, and the competition also replaces the majority of friendly matches. The first round of the UEFA Nations League took place from September to November 2018. The qualifying games for the EURO 2020 were played between March and November 2019. The subsequent playoffs in the Nations League will take place in March 2020.

The Nations League will only influence the cast of the tournament after completing the European Championship qualification. If the group winners do not qualify directly for the European Championship, they still have the opportunity to participate in the European Championship in a playoff tournament in March 2020.

Germany relegated from the A-League of the Nations League in 2018. After the relegation, Germany has nothing to do with the final round of the Nations League in June 2019, for which the eventual winner Portugal, Switzerland and England qualified in addition to the Netherlands. Thanks to a UEFA reform, the DFB team is now spared the disgrace of second-rate play.

The next Nations League group stage will take place after the 2020 European Championship. Germany will then start again in the A-League.

This is how the qualification for the European Championship 2020 works

According to the UEFA website, the qualification for the EURO 2020 is as follows:

  • The winner and runner-up of all ten Euro qualification groups will automatically receive a ticket for the final round of the EURO 2020.
  • The "normal" qualification for the EURO 2020 runs until November 19.
  • The four remaining starting places for the EURO 2020 will be determined via the play-off round, which will be held in March 2020. Based on the results of the UEFA Nations League, 16 teams will take part in the playoffs.
  • The EURO 2020 draw will take place after the end of the UEFA Nations League. The UEFA Nations League Final Four tournament will be drawn in groups of five teams.
  • There are ten groups in qualifying for the EURO 2020, five with five teams, five with six.
  • Germany will face the Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Estonia and Belarus in Group C.
  • Germany should do everything possible to complete the qualification for the EURO 2020 as group leader before Holland. Because: In the draw in pot 1, only the six best group first of the qualification come. Germany is in second place behind the Netherlands (or only seventh best group winner) at the 2020 European Championship.

Regarding the playoffs for the EM in March 2020, the Executive Committee decided:

  • The four group winners in each league (16 teams) qualify for the playoffs.
  • If a group winner is already qualified for the final tournament via the European Qualifiers, the team (s) with the next best place in the league will move up.
  • Playoff spots can go to lower leagues if fewer than four teams qualify for the playoff.
  • The knockout system will continue during the playoffs (two semi-finals and one final).

Euro 2020: Germany's possible group opponents

For the German national soccer team, there are numerous options for the opponent from the fourth pot even after the European Playoffs have been drawn. Co-host Hungary, who would certainly be a German group opponent in the event of a successful qualification, will initially meet Bulgaria in the playoffs next March in Pool A. The winner of the duel plays in the final against Iceland or Romania, who contest the second semi-final.

If Iceland, Bulgaria or Hungary prevail, they will automatically become the German preliminary round opponent in Group F, as another draw in Nyon revealed.

Since in addition to Hungary (with Budapest) and Romania (with Bucharest) will host the tournament in the coming summer, even with the European Championship draw on November 30th it is still not possible to decide which group the winner of the A-Pool will end up in. If Romania prevails, the winner of the A-Pool would be guaranteed in Group C with the Ukraine and the Netherlands. In this case, the winner of the D-Pool consisting of Georgia, North Macedonia, Kosovo and Belarus would move into the German group.

The possible German opponents from pot 4: Iceland, Bulgaria, Hungary, Georgia, Belarus, Kosovo, North Macedonia

Euro 2020: The schedule of the European Championship - you should keep clear on these dates

The schedule for the EURO 2020 will only be fully known when the remaining four teams from playoffs have been determined. However, these only take place at the end of March (March 26 and 31). The European Championship games in Germany (three preliminary round matches and one quarter-final will be played in Munich) can be found in the tables below ( bold ).

The final draw for the next European Championship took place on November 30, 2019. Here you will find the official schedule for the EURO 2020.

The games of the EM 2020 are broadcast on ARD and ZDF on TV in Germany. All times in CEST.

Group B: Saint Petersburg (Krestowski Stadium) and Copenhagen (Telia Parken)

Group B is almost complete before the draw on November 30th: Russia and Denmark are set because of the host cities of St. Petersburg and Copenhagen. The group head is Belgium, after Spain, England, Italy and Germany are all organizers and Ukraine cannot be drawn into a group with Russia for political reasons.

Only the fourth team of EM group B is missing. However, the selection is not particularly large: due to further requirements regarding hosts and politically impossible duels, only Finland and Wales are possible.

Euro 2020 in Germany: will the Allianz Arena in Munich be called "Munich EM Stadium"?

Will the Allianz Arena be renamed as one of the stadiums for the EURO 2020 in "UEFA EURO stadium Munich"? Even though Bayern boss Rummenigge vehemently supported the Allianz Arena’s bid for EURO 2020, FC Bayern may want to keep the logo of its advertising partner for the European Championship.

In the run-up to the 2006 World Cup, at which the Allianz Arena also acted as a venue, there was apparently a lot of noise between the then Bayern boss Uli Hoeneß and the ARD because of the name. The journalist Thilo Komma-Pöllath reports (wrote for "SZ-Magazin", "Stern", "Playboy" and "FAS", among others). In his bilious Hoeneß biography "The Hoeneß Files. Portrait of a Potentate" he writes:

"The ARD, repeatedly hit by surreptitious advertising scandals, made its reporters aware of the term 'Munich World Cup stadium' in the run-up to the World Cup in Germany. Hoeneß was beside himself, rumbled on the phone against the sports coordinator of the station and threatened that his Bayern players would no longer be available for interviews after the league games if that didn't change. Since then, the 'Munich World Cup stadium' has been called 'Allianz Arena' on ARD again. "

The fact is: Because Allianz was not an advertising partner of FIFA, the stadium was renamed "FIFA World Cup Stadium Munich" before the 2006 World Cup and the Allianz Arena lettering was removed from the stadium. The logo was attached to the Haus der Kunst in Munich during the tournament. It is quite possible that the Allianz Arena logo will be dismantled again during the EURO 2020 and the stadium will be renamed "UEFA EURO Stadium Munich". Unless the alliance is one of the advertising partners of the continental football association UEFA in 2020.

The Allianz Arena was remodeled for ten million euros during the 2017 summer break. Within ten weeks, a new floodlight, a new welcome zone and a new esplanade were created; Arena managing director Jürgen Muth is particularly proud of the video walls that have been decorating the arena since the renovation. "We had the Champions League final in 2012, we're playing the EURO in 2020, I'm not a prophet when I say that we could be back at the EURO in 2024. And we would also be very happy to have another Champions League final "said Muth. "So if you want to run one of the best stadiums in the world in Europe, you have to invest accordingly." To finally take up Muth's words: You really don't have to be a prophet to realize that the all-round renewal also benefits the attractiveness of the arena during the EURO 2020. We are excited!

Euro 2020 in Germany: Munich site reveals logo

Contrary to the unresolved question about the naming of the Allianz Arena, a decision regarding the Munich location has already been made: the logo. Among other things, you can see the EM Cup and the Wittelsbacher Bridge built between 1903 and 1905.

Why this? Well, the choice of design has a large symbolic background. Each city will include its most famous bridge in the logo. The message: A Europe-wide connection of the tournament. "It may not be the most succinct Munich logo, but with the explanation and the topic 'building bridges', I think it's a very successful idea," said Mayor Dieter Reiter of the design.

The final round itself is shown by the public broadcasters - ARD and ZDF have been able to secure the broadcasting rights.

Update from September 27, 2018: It has now been decided in Nyon that Germany will be awarded the European Football Championship 2024. The competitor was Turkey.
