Schorsch Volkert, Bundesliga icon of HSV and 1. FC Nürnberg

The long-time Bundesliga professional Georg "Schorsch" Volkert died at the age of 74. FC St. Pauli, for whom Volkert worked as a manager in 1986 and 1990, confirmed his death. The "Hamburger Morgenpost" had previously reported.
Volkert had won the German championship with 1. FC Nürnberg as a player and won the 1977 European Cup Winners' Cup with Hamburger SV. He also played for VfB Stuttgart and FC Zurich.
He completed more than 400 Bundesliga games in his career. He ran twelve times for the German national team.
Volkert became an icon at HSV. As an active player he played between 1971 and 1978 with Uwe Seeler and Kevin Keegan, among others. In 1990 he returned to HSV as a manager for a year after having previously been with city rivals FC St. Pauli.

In 2017, Volkert suffered a heart attack from which he never fully recovered.
