Placed in police custody Thursday, José Anigo was indicted for "criminal conspiracy to commit a crime" this Sunday and placed under judicial supervision.

The historical figure of Olympique de Marseille, former player, coach and sports director of the Marseille club, is involved in an investigation linked to Marseille banditry.

"The legal debate is far from over since it remains presumed innocent and the investigations and appeals which remain to be carried out will demonstrate that this procedure is questionable in form and in substance", indicates his lawyer in La Provence, who has revealed the information.

According to the regional daily, José Anigo, currently in charge of international recruitment at the English club of Nottingham Forest (D2), is suspected of having given up a large sum of money to members of the "Capelette gang", some of whom were relatives of his son, Adrien, shot at the end of 2013. This is disputed by the person concerned.

Criminal network

Monday, several members of the same "band of the Capelette" had been apprehended in the context of the dismantling of a criminal network suspected of "extortion in an organized gang to the detriment of night establishments and in the world of football".

In all, around twenty suspects were arrested, including Jean-Luc Barresi and Michel Campanella, the “godfather of Marseille”.

The investigations focus in particular on the transfer of Isaac Lihadji, a young 18-year-old striker trained at OM, recruited this summer by Lille.

"The offense of extortion of funds in an organized band in connection with the transfer of Isaac Lihadji cannot be blamed on him, Mr. Anigo was not indicted on this point", specifies his lawyer.

While the prosecution requested his placement in pre-trial detention, José Anigo was left free.
