Ski: Pinturault, 4th in Kranjska Gora, sees Odermatt coming back on his heels

Untouchable in Slovenia when the Frenchman arrived at the foot of the podium, Marco Odermatt is only 31 points behind in the general classification of the World Cup.

Dazzling Swiss Marco Odermatt crushed Alpine Skiing World Cup giant Kranjska Gora (Slovenia) on Saturday.

He quickly returned to the general on the French Alexis Pinturault, frustrated by his 4th place.

The Swiss Loïc Meillard took the 2nd place at 1 sec 06 and the Austrian Stefan Brennsteiner the 3rd at 1 sec 09.

The small resort of Kranjska Gora borders the Triglav National Park in the Julian Alps, a stone's throw from the Italian and Austrian borders.

The park bears the name of the highest Slovenian peak, present on the national flag and the 50 cent coins, but also of a major god of Slavic mythology with three heads.

In alpine skiing, it is only two heads that overtake and fight bitterly for the major trophies at the end of the season.

One head is grinning, that of Marco Odermatt.

The 23-year-old Swiss youngster, carefree, without pressure, rushes headlong and crushes everything in his path at the end of the season.

Only 4th in the first round, he performed on Saturday a magic trick in the 2nd round on salty snow because of the great sun and the mild temperature (around 5 degrees) to explode his rivals, all pushed back to more than a second .

After his victory over the super-G in Saalbach last week, he continues and scores 100 points again, he who has not left the Top 10 since the descent of Bormio at the end of December, whether in downhill, in super- G or in giant.

Faivre 5th

The second head is pouting, it is that of Alexis Pinturault.

Yet still solid, 2nd in the first round, the Frenchman missed his 2nd pass without making a big mistake.

He failed just two hundredths from 3rd place and 5 hundredths from 2nd place, dust of time which cost him dearly (he scores 50 points, 2nd scores 80).

Still placed but no better than 3rd in the World Cup since the beginning of January and his two victories in Adelboden (Switzerland), Pinturault sees his lead in the general classification melt away at full speed.

277 points ahead at the end of January, he only has 31 left on Saturday with five races to go to the end of the season.

He had the opportunity on Sunday to get some fresh air on the slalom, which the Swiss did not compete in.

There will then remain four high pressure races next week at Lenzerheide in Switzerland (a downhill, a super-G, a giant, a slalom) to become the first Frenchman to win the big crystal globe since Luc Alphand in 1997.

At one week of his 30th birthday, he lost the lead in the giant standings for 25 points against Odermatt, a trophy he never won despite his 17 victories in the discipline.

Behind Pinturault, world champion Mathieu Faivre took 5th place.
