Four years after retiring from basketball, former NBA star Drone Williams has returned to record a sporting victory, but in a new industry that he may have previously thought he would get to participate in.
The 37-year-old Williams, who starred in Utah Jazz for six years and also played for the Brooklyn Nets, Dallas Mavericks and Cleveland Cavaliers (in Media Retired), decided to show that contrary to what people think, "basketball players are not soft, that's what I came to prove."
And where did he do it?
Well, Williams showed up at the boxing ring for a showdown, where he fought football player, running back Frank Gore.
It was an even, fun battle, at the end of which basketball won football.
"I was always physical, even in the point guard position. I never ran out of touch. I showed it today," boasted Williams, who won by points (100: 105) after a split decision by the judges.
"Maybe I gained new fans today," Williams said after the battle victory, "but mostly I'm glad I did myself a favor, that I was happy and made my family proud of me, including my mother, who did not want to watch the battle."
The 38-year-old puppy, who currently has no team, said after the loss: "Everything is fine. We both fought hard. I need to learn a few more things. We'll see if I can get back into boxing."
