Calculated risk: Lorenzo Insigne follows the big money | Israel today

2022-01-06T11:38:09.016Z

Lorenzo Insigne, a symbol of Napoli and one of the stars of the Italian national team (European champion, yes?), Decided to leave at the end of the season in favor of the big money in Toronto • While the MLS is already celebrating, the contact will have to fight to stay in the world consciousness

Assuming that it does take place - the corona plague is also raging among the Serie A teams and threatening to postpone games - tonight's meeting between Juventus and Napoli will probably be the last in which Lorenzo Insigne will take part.

At the age of 30, having been born, raised and played only in Naples (except for a few questions at the start of the previous decade), the midfielder and captain of the team decided it was time to move on to a new destination.

This possibility has been in the air for some time due to the fact that Insigne's contract expires this summer, but what is surprising in this story, is the destination the Italian has chosen.

Not another team in Italy, not a European luxury club, not a rising force competing in the Champions League.

According to all reports, Insigne arrived last night at a hotel in Rome where he signed a five-and-a-half year contract in Toronto from the MLS, which he will join at the end of the current season until 2028.

This is not the way everyone imagined the end of Insignia in Naples.

He first came to the club at the age of 15, when he was 20 already making his debut, and at the moment his balance sheet stands at 415 appearances and 114 goals - just one less than Diego Armando Maradona.

The captain was confident that this resume, plus a personal record of 19 goals last season and winning the European Championship in the Italian national team uniform in the summer, would suffice for a new and economically worthy contract.

Even the fans, who see him as a local idol, thought he would stay for many more years.

Instead, Napoli offered Insignia a 30% lower contract than he had in recent years, thinking it was not worth investing in a player who would soon celebrate 31. At the same time, Toronto submitted an offer of 11 million euros for the season plus four million in bonuses, and Insignia could not refuse such sums.

This transition raises a lot of questions.

First of all, how did Naples get to the point where it parted ways with one of the big stars without getting any consideration for it?

This is not the first time that the team from the south has lost one of its stars - Gonzalo Higuain, Escale Lovsey, Edinson Cavani, Georginio, Alan and Mark Hamshik have played for it in recent years - and it has sold them all for a lot of money.

Why now?

The fact that Insignia, the captain and sergeant, leaves her at the end of the contract and without putting money in her, is definitely puzzling.

Apparently when Napoli was willing to sell it, the right offer did not come.

Now that the contract has come to an end, a window of opportunity has opened into which Toronto has entered quickly and resolutely.

And here comes the big question: why did Insignia choose MLS?

Why in Toronto?

Many saw him as an Italian icon like Alessandro Del Piero and Gianluigi Buffon at Juventus or Francesco Totti in Rome, but unlike all of these he decided to leave home at 31 and into a less prestigious league.

In Toronto he will meet the Bradley family - father coach Bob and son captain Michael - as well as Josie Altidor and Venezuelan star Jefferson Sotaldo.

In addition, he has already received recommendations from his compatriot Sebastian Gubinko, who played for the club and stayed to live in the city, and according to some reports also Andrea Blotti from Turin on the way.

And yet, all of these reasons are not convincing enough.

"When I came here I was a bench player in Juventus," Giovinco told the Italian media, "but he is the captain of Naples!"

There is no doubt that professionally Insignia could have found a more attractive destination, but financially it seems not.

"I'm sure it's a lot of money," Gubinko confirmed;

"But it is important to know that there are a lot of taxes here and the amounts are not the same amounts."

Meanwhile, Toronto fans are celebrating.

They upload videos to social media and welcome their new Italian.

The American media is already calling the move "the biggest deal in the history of the league", because unlike Mazlatan, Beckham, David Villa and others, Insigne is at the peak of his career.

Now, just before it becomes official, one last question remains: Is this the right move for Insignia?

"I really hope he does not disappear from the team's radar," said Gubinko, "it happened to me, and I wish he could stay in consciousness in this league as well."

Were we wrong?
