Olympic giant slalom live: an overview of the medal ranks

1. Marco Odermatt (SUI)

2. Zan Kranjec (SLO)

3. Mathieu Faivre (FRA)

Update from February 9th, 9.03am: What was that finish?!

Stefan Brennsteiner from Austria was on course for silver after the first round, but made a big mistake and ended up only 24th.

Gold goes to the favorite Marco Odermatt (Switzerland), who in a crazy final sprint knocks the big surprise of this race from first place.

For Zan Kranjec there is "only" silver - but he will be very happy about that.

The Slovenian, who started as a blatant outsider, dedicated the medal to his father who died in an accident.

Mathieu Favre of France wins bronze.

1 - Marco Odermatt: Do we now see the gold ride?

Odermatt is concerned about safety, he wants to save his lead to the finish here.

However, Kranjec delivered an amazing ride down below.

Is that exciting!

And ORMATT CAN GET IT!

GOLD FOR THE CHILD PROGRESS FROM SWITZERLAND!

2 - Stefan Brennsteiner:

What is the Austrian showing us now?

At the top it is seven tenths ahead of Kranjec.

He loses her!

And then he even falls!

How bitter is that, Brennsteiner is out!

Kranjec has secured silver, Faivre bronze.

And now comes Marco Odermatt.

3 - Mathieu Faivre:

It's going to be exciting!

Faivre is struggling.

And the Frenchman finishes more than a second behind, Kranjec has a medal!

4 - Henrik Kristoffersen:

Here comes Kristoffersen!

The Norwegian is one of the big favorites for a medal, but he's slipping away!

Kristoffersen is lying in the snow, somehow getting up.

He finishes sixth.

Kranjec still on course for a medal, is he really starting eighth on the podium here?

5 - Thibaut Favrot:

The Frenchman comes in well, half a second ahead of Kranjec.

Then the mistake!

Eight tenths gone!

He's one and a half seconds off the finish line.

6 - Luca De Aliprandini:

Similar aggressive as Feller - similar outcome!

Luca De Aliprandini also departs.

And Zan Kranjec continues to gain ground.

7 - Manuel Feller:

The Austrian starts extremely wild - and is eliminated immediately!

He wanted too much.

The American takes the lead.

10 - Gino Caviezel:

11 - Alexis Pinturault:

He's ousting Verdu from first place, but in the end 24 hundredths won't be enough for him to make big leaps.

12 - Lucas Braathen:

Now the big names are slowly coming!

But the Norwegian is out.

13 - Joan Verdu:

Strong run from Verdu!

New best time!

Andorra is currently in first place here.

Can an outsider get far ahead?

Filip Zubzic won't, the Croatian leaves a lot behind.

Nevertheless, it is the interim lead.

He's actually a slalom specialist, but here he carves the new best time into the slope.

28 - Barnabas Szollos:

The conditions are still difficult, the large amount of fresh snow demands everything from everyone here.

The Israeli crosses the finish line but is almost two seconds behind Rauchfuss.

Giant slalom now live: German Olympic hope flies out after 20 seconds

First report from February 13, 6:04 a.m .:

Yanqing - After 20 seconds it was all over: The German giant slalom hope Alexander Schmid failed prematurely in the Olympic race.

The man from the Allgäu was driving in difficult visibility conditions with start number 9 and an interim best time when he merged in after a driving error.

Disappointed, he drove to the side of the track and sank into the snow.

"It annoys me, of course I've planned something else," said Schmid on ZDF.

He could only explain his exit by saying that it was a bit slippery.

I just slipped.” However, the borderline conditions on the “Ice River” slope in Yanqing should “not be an excuse, everyone has to go through it”.

Olympia: giant slalom in the live ticker – Alexander Schmid eliminated early

On Sunday, for the first time during the games, it snowed really big flakes in the alpine center, so the second women's downhill training session was cancelled.

Apparently unimpressed by this, top favorite Marco Odermatt clocked the best time after the first run.

However, the Swiss also made a mistake, but unlike Schmid, he just stayed on course.

Before the final (1:45 p.m. PT, 6:45 a.m. CET), Odermatt is 0.04 seconds ahead of Stefan Brennsteiner from Austria.

World Champion Mathieu Faivre (France) is another 0.04 seconds back in third.
