The first major sporting highlight of the year is the Winter Olympics in Beijing.
What decisions are pending on February 18?
We offer an overview.
Beijing/Munich - The 24th Olympic Winter Games in Beijing will be one of the biggest sporting highlights of 2022.
From February 4th to 20th, the best athletes in China will fight for the coveted medals.
Overall, athletes from 91 nations (as of January 24, 2022) were able to qualify for the games in China, including 149 athletes from Germany.
Olympia 2022: 109 competitions in and around Beijing
109 competitions will be held in seven sports and a total of 15 different disciplines. The first major Olympic tournaments will start on February 2nd with their preliminary rounds before the games are officially opened on February 4th.
As is so often the case, not all competitions are held in the venue itself, in addition to Beijing, the Yanqing and Zhangjiakou locations are also home to some sports facilities.
While the ice sports competitions are primarily held in the Chinese capital, the special disciplines are located in Yanqing (around 93 kilometers outside of Beijing) and Zhangjiakou (almost 200 kilometers outside of Beijing).
With the giant panda Bing Dwen Dwen and the Chinese lantern Shuey Rhong Rhong, the Chinese organizing committee has named two mascots for the 24th Winter Games.
The competitions in Germany will be broadcast by ARD, ZDF and Eurosport.
