Borussia Dortmund has dismantled Borussia Mönchengladbach and remains in second place in the Bundesliga, six points behind leaders Bayern Munich.
6-0 (2-0) BVB won a match in which Dortmund felt more was at stake than just three points.
Because after the 2: 4 against Rangers from Glasgow in the Europa League, the third surprising end in a cup competition this season threatens, the mood is tense.
"We play a lot of nonsensical football, illogical football, and that makes the opponent unnecessarily strong," defense chief Mats Hummels said afterwards.
Criticism that should no longer be a big issue - thanks to Marco Reus, who was directly involved in every goal.
Only: From Dortmund's point of view, the game didn't go as confidently as the result reads.
In the run-up to three BVB goals, the guest from Gladbach missed a similarly clear goal chance.
23 minutes: An all too risky pass from Hummels leads to Gladbach's Kouadio Manu Koné getting a shot, but BVB goalkeeper Gregor Kobel saves brilliantly.
Three minutes later, Donyell Malen charges through on the left and gets a hard shot that Gladbach goalkeeper Sommer is able to parry but not clear to the side.
So Reus gets the ball and shoots it into the right corner with remarkable coolness (26').
The 30th minute: Jonas Hofmann, himself a former BVB professional, appears in front of the Dortmund goal after a one-two with Breel Embolo – and cannot get past Kobel.
Two minutes later, Malen brought the ball to Reus, who immediately and perfectly timed the depth.
So Malen runs undisturbed towards the goal and overcomes keeper Sommer, albeit with a bit of luck (32nd).
The 62nd minute: Once again it is Hofmann who narrowly misses a Gladbach goal, this time he hits the crossbar.
This time it takes eight minutes before Dortmund scores, Reus serves Marius Wolf, who decides the game from the inside right (70th).
Now the Gladbachers were defeated.
But BVB kept up the pace and because Reus kept finding gaps between the opposing chains, he had more chances.
Before the 4-0, Reus appeared on the right in the penalty area during a counterattack and put across, the 17-year-old Youssoufa Moukoko executed coolly (74th).
And Reus scored the fifth goal himself, this time after assisting Hummels (82nd).
Emre Can made the final score with a penalty (90 + 1) - it was the only goal in this Bundesliga game in which Reus was not involved.
