Beijing – The Olympics celebrate themselves again at the end: the Winter Olympics in Beijing will end on Sunday after a good two weeks.

The closing ceremony is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. (CET) at the Beijing National Stadium.

The boban pusher Thorsten Margis carries the German flag.

“That is representative of all the pushers who always fall down a bit at the back.

It's the icing on the cake, I'm going to enjoy it for everyone," Margis said.

The games had been overshadowed by the corona pandemic and political controversy.

The Chinese government used the major sporting event to establish direct international contacts again after almost two years of corona isolation.

The USA and numerous other western countries had announced a diplomatic boycott of the games in protest against human rights violations in China.

Although Germany did not declare a boycott, it did not send any official representatives to Beijing either.

Olympia 2022: Germany in second place in the medal table

In terms of sport, the Olympics went brilliantly for Germany: the German team finished second in the medal table.

On the day of the closing ceremony, pilot Francesco Friedrich won the twelfth German gold in China in the four-man bobsleigh, Johannes Lochner won silver.

The Alpines had also finished second in the mixed team competition on Sunday.

With twelve gold, ten silver and five bronze medals, the athletes from Germany were only behind Norway (16/8/13).

Third place went to hosts China with nine golds, four silvers and two bronzes.

The 16 gold medals of the Scandinavians mean a Winter Games record, previously Norway and Germany held the record with 14 Olympic victories four years ago in Pyeongchang.

With 27 medals, the German team fell short of the 2018 total of 31 medals.
