Syrian weightlifter Talal Al-Najjar dies at the age of 69

The General Sports Federation and the Syrian Olympic Committee mourned the Syrian weightlifter, Talal Al-Najjar, who passed away today at the age of 69.

The federation said in a statement today, "Al-Najjar is one of the Syrian sports figures who left their mark in local, Arab, continental and international forums, and his sports career was full of achievements that were translated with more than fifty shining medals."

According to the statement, the late Al-Najjar achieved the gold of Homs governorate in weightlifting in his first participation in 1970, and a year later the silver of the Republic Championship and in 1973 the gold of the Republic Championship as well.

The gold medals accompanied the march of the late hero Al-Najjar in his Arab participation, where he achieved gold in the Arab Championship in Beirut in 1974, then the gold in the Fifth Arab Championship in Damascus in 1976, and the gold in the Arab Championship in Libya in 1978, in addition to the gold of the Asian Championship in Thailand in 1978, and in 1979 he achieved the gold of the Championship The Mediterranean, which was held in Yugoslavia, and broke the Arab, Asian and Mediterranean records in the Moscow Olympics in 1980, to continue his harvest with gold in the Asian Championship in Japan in 1981, and in the same year achieved the championship of steadfastness and resistance in Libya, and in 1982 he won first place in the ninth Asian session in India and first place in The Asian Championship in Damascus in 1983, and in the same year he won the title of the Islamic Games Championship in Iran.

The late Al-Najjar also achieved first place in the Sixth Arab Tournament in Morocco in 1985 and a year later ranked first in the Arab Championship in Damascus and concluded his participation with three bronze medals in the Mediterranean Games held in Lattakia in 1987.

It is noteworthy that the late Al-Najjar worked after his retirement as a coach and then head of the technical committee for the game in Homs and then vice-president of the Syrian Arab Weightlifting Federation.
